THE CHANGING WORLD OF KNOWLEDGE & LEARNING

The context of management has changed substantially over the last twenty years. The trajectory of the rising powers is uncertain and the business world is currently going through a management crisis. With flat organizational structures on the rise, more and more companies are reconsidering the role of management and managers. The course is designed for the students keeping in mind the role of Management in today’s changing business environment and emerging challenges. It will help the student excelling-in-a-rapidly-changing-world and understand:

  • The growth of the service sector, changes in the public sector, and the emergence of substantial not-for-profit, and small and medium enterprise sectors move from a dominant focus upon manufacturing
  • The growing diversity of organizational structures in business to include matrix, network, virtual and ‘adhocratic’ organizations, means that the traditional bureaucratic organization exists in only a limited number of businesses, and many organizations exhibit multiple organizational structures.
  • The practice of management no longer involves mainly the management of vertical lines of reporting and standard operating procedures.
  • Management increasingly involves the achievement of the balance between control and commitment, between the use of internal markets and reliance on regulation.
  • The technical knowledge base, the skills of leadership, team working, communication, influence, negotiation, and cross-cultural awareness are essential.
  • Finally, the imperatives of good business practice are also no longer immediately apparent. Corporate social responsibility and a concern with corporate reputation place ethical dilemmas at the center of everyday management activity. Managers, therefore, require a capability for ethical sensitivity and reasoning.
These factors have been taken into account in the review of the Kingston EMBA, and have strongly influenced the subsequent design and rationale of the programme. In consequence, the programme starts with placing a strong emphasis upon self-awareness and self-management and then expands to include the technical knowledge and skills required to manage organizational processes. This involves exposure to the theoretical knowledge base of the main business functions. At the same time, an attempt is made to integrate learning across the EMBA programme by pursuing a common thematic agenda in each core course subject.
